How to make comparison and choose the best quote for your car insurance

Cheap car insurance isn't always the best

"Cheap car insurance" rarely translates to "best car insurance".

Did you know that the cheapest car insurance is not always the best? It's true! The best car insurance for a person or family can vary on a case by case basis. For some people, the cheapest car insurance may be the best option. However, others are interested in customer service, a low deductible, or even the reputation of the insurance company.

In other words, you get what you pay for.

Here are a few reasons why the cheapest car insurance available isn't always the best car insurance for you:

  • Minimal coverage means minimal protection. While your minimum liability coverage looks tempting, consider how it'll help you after an unexpected accident. What seems like a money-saving decision at checkout time can quickly turn ugly when it's time to file a claim.

  • Higher deductibles = more out-of-pocket expenses. Bumping up your deductibles will shave a bit off the top of your insurance bill, sure. But it'll also increase the cost of filing a claim. Paying as much as $1,000 out of pocket in order when you file a comprehensive claim can make the money you saved on your premium feel paltry.

  • Lower limits lead to increased liabilities. Available limits can seem astronomically high — far beyond the levels of damage you imagine you might inflict. But you'd be surprised how fast those limits can be reached and breached, leaving you liable for the excess.

Knowing what your policy covers

You are advised to ask your insurer to provide you with a summary of key contract terms and obligations with your policy. You must make sure that the insurer has disclosed the following details to you:

  • The premium payable

  • The excess (for insured and drivers – named and unnamed)

  • The scope and period of coverage

  • Restriction on drivers (if any)

  • Restriction on repairs

  • Non-standard exclusions

  • Special accident reporting and claims procedures

  • The insurer’s cancellation and refund policy

When in the market for auto insurance it is important to take many things into consideration and to shop around so that you know what your options are. The level of customer service and the relationship that you have with your agent are big factors that go into determining the best car insurance for some people. In a time of need, some customers want to know that they have a trustworthy agent available that will attend to their needs immediately. Having this comes with a price, however. Often times, you can get a cheaper rate by dealing with an insurance company that does not have local, community based offices. Since there is no local office, the level of customer service isn't the same. You could spend hours, or even days, waiting for a representative to help you.

The level of the deductible also plays a part in how cheap your vehicle insurance is. A person who values a low deductible will have to pay more monthly than a person who has a high deductible. This is a personal choice. Some are willing to pay more upfront and then less after an unfortunate incident.
